Quantum Engineer - Control and Automation
Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) is at the forefront of global efforts to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer, while delivering quantum-enhanced AI and simulation products to customers today.
Backed by over 25 years of technological excellence, SQC is a full-stack quantum computing company that leverages its proprietary manufacturing process to engineer atomic qubits in silicon with 0.13 nanometer precision. It is the most precise semiconductor manufacturing in the world, enabling systems with world-leading algorithmic fidelity, and a decisive advantage in the global quantum computing race.
Our products are commercially deployed and generating revenue. Watermelon, our quantum-enhanced AI system, is delivering superior results on real-world problems across energy, telecom and finance. Quantum Twins, our simulation platform, provides unparalleled ability to model quantum systems, accelerating molecule and materials discovery.
This is SQC: building the future of computing while delivering quantum impact today.
About the role
We are hiring a Quantum Engineer to advance the automation of device calibration for SQC’s world-leading multi-qubit processors. Working closely with the full-stack team, you will turn manual qubit measurement routines into robust, automated calibration workflows — including through development of tailored workflows and the evaluation and integration of third-party tools. Your work will directly increase processor uptime and measurement throughput, accelerating progress toward scaled, error-corrected architectures. This role suits an early-career experimentalist with strong software skills who is excited to make quantum processors run themselves.
Role responsibilities
- Perform characterisation of atom spin-qubit devices, including tune-up, readout optimisation, stability measurements, qubit performance etc.
- Design, implement, and maintain automated calibration and tune-up workflows to maximise processor up-time and measurement throughput.
- Research, evaluate, and integrate third-party control and calibration tools into SQC’s measurement and control stack.
- Develop and maintain measurement and data analysis code, with an emphasis on reliability, reusability, and integration into the wider stack.
- Analyse experimental datasets and extract clear performance metrics against defined requirements.
- Collaborate with software and hardware engineering teams to ensure calibration workflows integrate cleanly with the full control stack.
- Stay abreast of industry trends in automated calibration, quantum control, and characterisation tooling.
Your experience
Essential:
- Bachelor’s, Honours, or Master’s degree in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience measuring quantum devices, or equivalent hands-on experience automating complex laboratory experiments.
- Strong proficiency in Python, with sound software engineering practices.
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to drive work to completion in a dynamic start-up environment.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with shared ownership of outcomes.
Desirable:
- Hands-on experience in developing agentic workflows.
- Experience with spin qubits or other solid-state qubit platforms.
- Familiarity with RF measurement techniques and instrumentation.
- Experience applying machine learning or optimisation methods to device tuning and calibration.
The recruitment process
For roles at SQC, expect 3-4 interviews, meeting a few members of the team and focusing on your core eligibility for the role, your skills and how they align, and finally your values and how they align. We'll give you a more specific runthrough if you're successful in making it to the first interview.
As part of our obligations to our clients, we require that successful candidates submit to background checks, including a National Police Check, Right to Work checks, as well as employment and qualifications verification. We won't contact anyone until we're confident there's a fit between SQC and yourself.
Equal opportunity
SQC is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives and experiences, and encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every listed requirement. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.
Export controls
This position may require access to export-controlled information or technology. Employment may be subject to applicable export control laws and may require eligibility assessment based on factors such as nationality, citizenship, or residency, and, where necessary, obtaining relevant export licenses or approvals.
About SQC
SQC was founded by renowned physicist and materials scientist Michelle Simmons, who pioneered the field of atomic electronics, including the development of the world’s first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of Arm, is a leader in the semiconductor industry and was instrumental in developing the processors that powered the mobile computing revolution.
As a full-stack company with in-house QPU manufacturing, SQC can design, produce and test new quantum chips in under a week, enabling rapid iteration and a decisive advantage in the race to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer.
SQC is a high-accountability environment built on a simple principle: Every Atom Counts. If you’re looking to play a meaningful role in building the next frontier of computing, we’d love to hear from you.
